The trip across the Bosphorus from the Asian side to the European is special. Although the setting and the scenery are very dissimilar, it is a bit like riding the Star ferry in Hong Kong. Someone asked me, "Why Istanbul?" In truth, although it is possible to live almost anywhere for short periods of time... like a year or two, one needs an escape every now and then... and for me in Japan and Korea, it was Hong Kong. Still Asian, but Western enough to provide me with a little taste of home. Now that I am in Kurdistan, Istanbul has become my Hong Kong.
